Field Cleaning

Items Needed or Cleaning:
Patch worm
Nipple wrench
Nipple pick
Cleaning patches (1 1/2" x 1 1/2" cloth material)
Screw driver (for 1861 Sprirngfield rifles)
Hot Water

Step 1:
Place a patch over the nipple and lower the hammer to hold it in place. Pour water into the barrel of rifle. (Becareful not to burn your hand.) Place your thumb over the muzzle to seal it and prevent splashing. Shake the water up and down the musket barrel. Pour the water out and repeat until it runs clear.

Step 2:

Screw the worm on to the ramrod. Take a cleaning patch and attach it to the worm. Wrap it so that the prongs of the worm are covered.

Step 3:
Slide the patch & worm down the inside of the barrel wiping the powder residue away. Replace with a clean patch and repeat until the patch comes out clean and dry.

Step 4:
Remove the nipple with the nipple wrench. Clean the nipple with the nipple pick. Wipe the nipple threads clean with a damp patch.

Step 5:
Wrap a cleaning patch around the nipple pick and clean out the vent hole. (For 1861 Springfields, remove the vent screw as well.)

Step 6:
Replace the nipple and tighten with the nipple wrench. Wipe away any residual water on the musket with a dry patch.
